[Abk. für American Standard Code for Information Interchange, dt. »amerik. Standardcode für den Informationsaustausch«] (ASCII-Code), ein Code, d. h. ein Zuordnungsschema, mit dem Ziffern, Buchstaben und Sonderzeichen durch sieben Bits dargestellt werden. Daraus ergeben sich 27 = 128 mögliche Zeichen, die zusammen den ASCII-Zeichensatz bilden. Wenn ein Zeichen aus diesem Satz nach ASCII kodiert ist und in einem Byte (umfasst 8 bit) gespeichert wird, dient das freie achte Bit meist als Prüfbit (Parität). ASCII ist in den meisten Minicomputern und in allen PCs eingebaut, sodass es keinerlei Probleme bereitet, reine ASCII-Texte zwischen verschiedenen Programmen oder Plattformen (also Betriebssystemen) auszutauschen. Schwierig wird es erst, wenn - wie heute üblich - mit dem erweiterten ASCII-Zeichensatz gearbeitet wird.
